Tough Question Tuesday: Hope

What is one thing that gives you hope (either now, or for the future)?

Something that gives me hope for the future is when students ask questions that show they have been paying attention. This is especially true when those questions aren’t related directly to what they will be graded on.

This gives me hope because it shows that they are curious, and they actually want to learn. I deeply believe that curiosity is a trait that sets humans apart from other organisms. While unfamiliar situations can pique the interest of other animals, humans appear to be unique in the depth and persistence of their drive to understand what puzzles them. Curiosity is one of the things that makes us special.

And when my students show that they, too, are special in that way, that gives me hope for what they may one day discover.

What gives you hope?
